9 November: Expo and Music
Underground Up!
De Stadsjutters will submerge you in the underground pool of creativity where we stem from: the Utrecht squatting and alternative scene.
Together with Modulation, Rave for the Rafelranden, and the Utrecht squatting info hour we’ll create a stage for underground artists–promoting and celebrating free spaces, DIY cultures, solidarity, noise, trash and radical resistance.
Come and join our quirky community, where we create our own world and celebrate radical self expression.
This event is part of the U? festival and curated by de Stadsjutters. This is a free event. If you want to support the artists, donations are very welcome.

Modulation
Modulation is Utrecht’s own accessible night of live performances and concerts centered around modular synthesizers and other hardware electronic instruments. A place for newcomers as well as veterans, from ambient to noisemakers, explosive beats, cinematic soundscapes – and everything in between. All performers will be playing in the middle of the space, to make sure you can see where all the sonic magic is happening during each performance.
Veerle Pennock, performing under the name Elektortek, is a creative electronics builder, living beep machine and live performer with modular synth and hardware live-sets. As founder of Utrecht’s DIY synthesizer Lab and creative electronics workspace Acid Solder Club, she’s always working on strange machines and unconventional interfaces, and drags them from the soldering cave to the stage. Her musical style can go from ambient to slapping kicks in a few seconds; blending genres, and layering and looping sequences that are bouncing between melodic and melancholic.
Marco and Martijn (of a.o. Cinema Perdu) joined forces to create The Music Machine: an interactive project where the public becomes a participant in a spatial sound installation. During U?, they invite visitors to play on various motorized controls via a self made interface and app running on a tablet, and welcoming them to participate in their soundscape.
Hemiptera
Imagine if the apocalypse had a soundtrack with crust vocals, sad melodies and d-beat fury. That is Hemiptera! Our set will be a journey through hope, destruction and desperation. In our songs we talk about dreaming of the fall of capitalism and how we wish all forms of oppression would end. Join us for some antifascist emo crust with cello and scream at the world with us!

Tony the Sick Pony
Tony the Sick Pony makes experimental music that mixes and mashes genres, creating a high energy set. His self-described ‘neo-jungle cut music’ style incorporates sampled elements of dub, jungle, thrash metal, punk inspired blast beats, and boom bap hip-hop all while he supplies live drums. Expect a relentlessly danceable journey that will blow you away.
Rave voor de Rafelranden
“De Rafelranden in Utrecht – The Present and the Past from the Underground”
Rave voor de Rafelranden organises festive demonstrations to fight for more free spaces and non commercial culture in Utrecht. They highlight the importance of places that are created and shaped by a community from the bottom up, such as squats, alternative living communities and autonomous creative spaces.
For this event, they created an exhibition showcasing the gritty underground culture of Utrecht, from its past to the present. Through images, sounds, and stories, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the rebellious spirit that defies the mainstream, capturing the raw energy of the city’s hidden spaces. Get an inside look at life behind barricaded doors, where art, activism, and freedom converge. Join us for a peek into Utrecht’s counterculture—where creativity thrives on the edge. It’s time to dive into the rafelranden and bring the underground to the surface!
KSU Utrecht (squatting info hour)
The Utrecht squatting info hour (kraakspreekuur) offers an alternative to the housing crisis by providing you with everything you ever wanted to know about squatting. Support your local squatting scene by getting a DIY screen print on whatever piece of clothing you decide to bring to the event.
